Stratton Winter Sports Club Blogs: Your source for FUN this winter!

Year of Birth 2003 & 2004

The U16 athletes typically have had a number of years of racing experience and are expert skiers. The U16 program continues to work on technical free skiing with an increased focus on gate training, racing, and video analysis. The U16 athletes will participate in the Vermont Cup race series and the Vermont U16 State Championship. The top performers at the U16 State
Championships will move on to an Eastern Championships. The athletes will also focus on the development of their US Ski & Snowboard ‘point profile’.

Typical equipment needs include: FIS approved GS/SG Helmet (no ‘soft ears’), GS suit, slalom protection gear, a back protector, and properly sized SL, GS and SG skis. Athletes must be members of the Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA) as well as US Ski & Snowboard.

Requirements: VARA Membership, US Ski & Snowboard Competition Membership, FIS approved GS Helmet, back protection (highly recommended)

Times: 8:30am to 3pm (Lunch 11:30am to 12:30pm)

Performance

Share our excitement in how awesome our athletes are developing and our pride in their accomplishments. It would seem clear that performance could be easily measured by did they lower their points or by winning the race. At this level it’s not a metric we use to measure the development of our athletes over the season. Instead a more important benchmarking to competitiveness is seeing how our athletes are starting in a race and then finishing against their peers. Let me share some impressive stats from the last race. Out of all the SWSC athletes that finished the race below is how many spots they moved up from where they were seeded / started the race.

Matt Jacobs 43

Evan Coltman 40

Cameron Shipman 35

Rosemary Collins 33

Adam Frommer 32

Mark Mazzatta 31

Justin Wienberger 31

Doug Phillips 23

Nick Morin 19

Kat Gargiulo 11

Lucy Dale 8

Aggie Ryan 2

Now add to that almost 50% of the athletes in the field are skiing / training full time. Don’t get me wrong, ski racing is a sport where results matter but as we tell the kids in training we celebrate the victories along the way. The coaching staff is proud of the effort our athletes are putting in and excelling against their peers. Awesome job….keep working hard!!

We were all disappointed that this weekend didn’t work out.  I’m not a big fan of Saturday races. We can’t afford to trade 2 runs in race for 10-12 training runs on Saturday, with questionable weather coming in for Sunday. Let’s make this weekend great a Stratton. See the previous post for details on training for this weekend.
